Fort Hays State University offers several pathways to becoming a special educator. Bachelor's programs include: SPED High and Low Incidence, Early Childhood Unified, Elementary Education PreK-6/Special Education, Registered Apprenticeships.

Already have a Bachelor's degree in another field? No problem! FHSU also offers an alternative pathway to traditional special education licensure. The limited residency program is a two- or three-year M.S. program for individuals who desire to become special education – high incidence teachers, but do not have a degree in education. Here is another route! A Master of Science in Education (Emphasis in Elementary Education) Transition to Teaching (Elementary T2T) allows candidates to also choose to add a provisional endorsement in PreK–12 High Incidence Special Education by completing one additional summer semester of coursework earning dual credentials.
Emporia State University's "Teacher College" offers both Bachelor's and Master's level opportunities towards Special Education licensure. Elementary education unified (K-6) is a Bachelor's level option. This can be completed in a traditional model or through a combination of working concurrently as a paraeducator.
The Master's in Special Education Gifted, Talented, and Creative concentration or High-Incidence concentration. Educators on these two paths must already have a teaching license in some area.
ESU also offers Licensure only programs in High Incidence Special Education, Gifted (K-6, 6-12), and Early Childhood Unified (birth-grade 3). Educators on these two paths must already have a teaching license in some area.
Wichita State University offers online courses for paraprofessionals or long-term subs to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Early Child Unified/Elementary Education. Students are not required to have completed any general education courses before starting this Teacher Apprentice Program (TAP). Experience working as a para will earn you college credit toward your degree.
WSU also has Master's of Education programs for those who already have a Teaching License including: Early Childhood Unified, High Incidence and Low Incidence.
Have a Bacehlor's degree but not in education? No problem! WSU offers two alternative pathways to earn your teaching license concurrent with earning a Master's in Education and working full time as a special education teacher. Alternative routes: High Incidence Special Education & Low Incidence Special Education.
Kansas State University offers flexible, online Master’s programs for High Incidence and Low Incidence special education for individuals who already have a teaching license. If you are only seeking licensure without the Master's degree, work towards endorsement only in either High Incidence or Low Incidence-(you must already have a high incidence license to be eligible) Special Education.
Pittsburgh State University has designed a program specifically for paraprofessionals to earn their Elementary Education Unified degree through the Para 2 Teach program.
Currently licensed teachers may seek a Master's in Special Education at Pitt State but so can non-licensed individuals holding a Bachelor's degree in another field through either Teaching Special Education grades 6-12 or Teaching Special Education High-Incidence K-6.
The University of Kansas offers a Limited Residency License in Low-Incidence Special Education with an Optional Master’s degree in Special Education, through the KU Para to Teacher Project: Pathway to Low Incidence Endorsement (must have a Bachelor's degree in any field).
Already have a teaching license? KU offers a range of specialized master’s programs in special education, preparing educators to support students with diverse learning needs: Autism spectrum disorder, Low incidence disabilities, Early childhood unified (Birth-K) and Secondary special education transition.
Washburn University offers a Master's of Education in Special Education for individuals who already hold a teaching license as well as a path for individuals who already hold a Bachelor's degree in another field to utilize the Limited Residency License pathway to earn a Master's in Special Education K-6 or 6-12 while teaching within the field.
Western Governors University is an online university with self-paced course work allowing candidates to accelerate through their program of study. WGU has two Bachelor's options available for special education:
Special Education and Elementary Education (Dual Licensure): This version of our special education program is for individuals who are seeking an elementary education teaching license and a special education teaching licensure for grades K-12.
Special Education (Mild to Moderate): This version of our special education program is for individuals who are looking to obtain licensure as a special education teacher for grades K-12.
WGU also offers a Master's in Special Education K-12 for individuals who already have a teaching license.
Baker University offers an Alternative Path to a Master’s in Special Education through a para to teacher program when the paraeducator already holds a Bachelor's degree in any field.
Those who already have a teaching license may also pursue a Master's in Special Education online through Baker University.
